Café Subterranea is unique!

It’s a deliciously enticing, expressive platform that blends a luscious variety of arts from in and around Worcestershire in one tantalising evening of performance!

Regarded fondly by artists and audience alike as ‘ Worcester’s answer to The Cavern Club’, it plays host to a melting pot of creative opportunities and possibilities in an informal, friendly and intimate setting.

As a performer, Café Subterranea is the perfect occasion to get yourself seen and make your voice heard whatever your art form. As an audience member you are treated to a whole medley of artistic genre from the bizarre to the sublime and everything in-between! It truly is a feast for the senses – not forgetting the taste buds which are served up a treat of their own with our (in)famous veggie-friendly supper and drinks from the bar (available throughout the evening).

Café Subterranea is held at Worcester Arts Workshop around four times a year. In late Autumn, early Spring, Summer and again during Worcester’s Summer Festival (sometimes outside on our courtyard – weather permitting!).

The event has been running in one form or another since 1997, originating as an evening of performed poetry with a twist and becoming a platform for local bands, musicians and other performers in a collaboration with the then music development officer for Worcester City Council. This partnership caused the event to grow hugely in content and popularity and Café Subterranea became a regular slot in the Worcester Arts Workshop’s event listings. Over the years it continued to evolve gradually into a more encompassing arena for a whole host of new, traditional and experimental art forms and is today, a thriving fusion of its original roots and the ever-changing artistic climate. This exciting growth is due to the artists, audiences and supporters the event attracts and showcases - making Café Subterranea always surprising, invitingly succulent, satisfyingly memorable….. all that it’s famous for!
