DJ Andrew & Marston & Friends (Musicians’ set)

August 16, 8:00 pm - 11:30 pm

Known for his support for new musicians across the region, Andrew’s own music has very much taken a backseat. But it was, in fact, his love of playing the keyboards/synthesisers/pianos that led him to landing his BBC Music Introducing job in the first place! Here’s Andrew’s ‘elevator pitch’.
  • Discovered my sister’s tape recorder at 4 and started being annoying (I haven’t stopped yet).
  • Learned keyboards aged 6.
  • Joined hospital radio at 14.
  • DJ’d at a kids’ disco later that year – and then landed a Tuesday nightclub residency playing ‘nappy night’!
  • Started playing the piano, got very bored, so learned classical, jazz, ragtime – but really just wanted to play dance music.
  • Didn’t see the point of playing the ‘same old records’ so won an award for Non-Music Programme of the Year aged 17.
  • Got fired from Hospital Radio because I didn’t tell them about the award, but landed a job at the BBC reclaiming tape.
  • Got told to go to uni, but didn’t want anybody else to have my job at the BBC so would be a reporter during the day and started running weekly band nights.
  • At 24, started presenting The Friday Session – to be told ‘there probably isn’t enough music to sustain this week-in-week-out’.
  • At 26, nearly had the show taken off me because Radio 1 thought it was treading on their toes. Instead, BBC Introducing was born.
  • I’ve not done a lot different since. But I’ve now spent more than half a lifetime behind the record decks and on the ol’ wireless.
For this special Friday evening performance, I’ll be bringing along a few of my favourite local musicians who’ve been able to turn some of my compositions into a track that doesn’t even sound my own!
Small Morris (Rapper) – TBC
’Smalz’ was born in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe. He grew up in Gokwe, which is situated in the middle of the country, before moving to Hereford with his parents to escape the troubles. When he arrived in the city, the first thing he did was to put pen to paper in the free world and find new ways of expressing his past. Although, many of his tracks are – nowadays – about nights out and girls!
Tripbuk (Rapper)
This Leominster musician has one of the most distinctive styles in drum & bass and dubstep. He’s fragile sole who’s often unable to work because of a bone condition – but, on tape, he’s cutting edge and at the top of his game. In fact, Annie Nightingale is a huge fan – and he’s had more Radio 1 airplay than you can shake a subwoofer at.
Lucia Nicole (Vocalist)
Lucia went to the same school as Ellie Goulding and has been following in her footsteps ever since, with incredible music, top notch video productions and glamorous photo shoots. She’s appeared at countless festivals and has one of the most powerful voices in the region.
Nature Of Wires (Synthesisers)
Like many groups, this band felt compelled to write rock music while – at heart – were huge dance junkies. But, as well as their own incredible work – which is huge in Germany – founder Gary Watts spends his time remixing other people’s creations. Tonight, we’ll be debuting remix #50!
Joshua Crivelli (Saxophone/Percussion) – TBC
This Worcester multi-instrumentalist has been touring with me for a couple of years now, performing regular spots at Naughty But Nice and on stage at Lakefest. As well as being able to remix tracks live with new compositions, his percussive skills can make even the stillest person booty-shake!
Andrew Marston (Synthesisers/Visual DJ)
Expect live loops, new compositions, familiar basslines and keyboard-over-the-head theatrics as Andrew brings the party to town – and, quite literally, into the crowd. Plus, lots of clever twists on familiar classics as he introduces you to his own world of live mashups, vocal overlays and special effects.
